Do You Have an Addiction Problem?

If you suspect that alcohol or drugs are having a negative impact on your life, this will be a sign that you have a problem. We usually tend to underestimate this type of negative behaviour so that by the time we become suspicious the alcohol or drugs will have already taken hold of our life. Those people in County Fermanagh who have not yet crossed the line into physical and psychological dependence may be able to regain control with the right support and information. By the time most people begin questioning their substance abuse though, they will have already crossed the line into addiction, and the only option will be complete abstinence. If you are unsure if you have a problem, we will be happy to discuss this with you. Just call us, or text the word “help” to 66777. We will be aware of all of the resources available to help you in the County Fermanagh area.

Importance of Ending Your Addiction Problem Right Now

When people are in the early stages of addiction it can feel as if they have all the time in the world to sort out this problem. Even when the individual is able to acknowledge that the behaviour is having a negative impact on their life, they will still be able to make up excuses for why they should continue with the abuse. The person may even believe that they have to reach a certain low point before they will be able to stop. This is a misunderstanding of what is meant by the rock bottom. This is not a certain point in addiction that the individual has to reach in order for them to be able to stop, but instead is the point where they decide to stop. There is no need for the individual to destroy their life in order to reach the fabled rock bottom – it is always exactly where the person is now.

There are some good reasons for why you need to deal with your addiction problems right now:

  • · If you do not stop drinking or drug use now there is no guarantee that you will be able to stop later. Things are likely to just keep deteriorating, and you may reach a point where a full recovery is no longer possible. It is important to keep in mind that the longer the addiction goes on the lower your belief in your ability to stop will fall – in other words, your self-efficacy decreases as your addiction progresses.
  • · The longer you remain addicted the more you will end up suffering – why would you possibly want to suffer more.
  • · The sooner you end the addiction the sooner you can begin to enjoy a much better life.
  • · The longer you remain addicted the more other people are going to suffer. It is not fair to cause so much pain for the other people who care about us.
  • · Addiction is a serious business, and if you are unable to quit it will eventually kill you. It is too much of a risk to continue with this behaviour because there is no telling how soon it will be before something serious happens. You could die today from alcohol poisoning or a drug overdose. The idea of continuing the addiction is the same as somebody with malignant cancer wanting to wait for treatment until things progress a bit more.
