FAQs & Articles

One of the reasons for why people can remain trapped in addiction for many years is that they are unaware that there is another option. It would be wrong to say that addiction occurs due to a lack of knowledge, but it is reasonable to argue that if people had the right information it would make it easier to break away from this type of behaviour.

Access to knowledge about addiction is important for a number of reasons including:

  • The individual will often use misinformation to justify their behaviour. For example, the person may believe that life in recovery is boring or unsatisfying. It is only by finding out how this is not the case that they may become willing to try the sober life.
  • The affected person can believe that the suffering of substance abuse is normal. This individual may have grown up surrounded by this behaviour, and they may be unaware of how there can be a far more satisfying way to live.
  • Because of lack of information, the person may believe that there is no way for them to escape addiction. It is only by finding out about the various options that the individual can begin to hope, as they find a path that works for them.
  • When people are trapped in addiction, they will tend to pick up plenty of wrong information about life. Most of this knowledge will then be used to help them navigate from day to day. In order to break away fully from addiction, the individual will need to replace this bad information with good information.
  • They say that knowledge is power, and this can definitely be the case when it comes to beating addiction. This knowledge will not only help the person end the substance abuse but also begin building a new and more satisfying life.
  • Many substance abusers will have fallen into this behaviour at a young age before they had the opportunity to develop appropriate coping skills and strategies. The information that they can pick up in recovery will allow the individual to develop better ways of dealing with things – something that will replace hiding from life with alcohol and drugs.
  • One of the great benefits of good information about addiction recovery is that it means that the individual will not have to learn through a process of trial and error. It means that the person will be able to learn from the mistakes of other people and avoid the suffering that this would have involved. There are millions of people who have already negotiated the path from addiction to sobriety, and it just makes sense to learn from them. The problem with trying to reinvent the wheel every time is that the majority of people will end up with something that is substandard.
  • In groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, they recommend that members “stick with the winners.” By getting the right information, the individual will be able to follow a path to success. It can also be helpful to read the stories of those who have managed to overcome their addictions because these can be very inspiring.

How to Benefit from the Learning Zone on this Website

You will find plenty of informative articles on this website, and hopefully these will give you a better idea of what is involved in addiction recovery. It does help to read widely on this subject, and to always remember that other humans are providing the information. Ideas about addiction change all the time as our knowledge in this area grows, and there is a great deal of personal opinion involved. This certainly does not mean that the information is not worth having, but it does indicate that perhaps it should never be taken as definitive. The best advice when dealing with information articles is to take what works for you and ignore the rest.

Another thing to keep in mind when dealing with the information in the learning zone is that reading about something is not the same as doing it. You could spend the rest of your life finding out about addiction and still not make any progress until you actually take action to end it. Some people will try to use information gathering as an avoidance tactic because it is always going to be easier to think about getting better than it is to actually do something to make yourself better. In order to get the most out of the information provided in the learning zone, you will need to be taking practical steps to end your addiction as well as gathering information.

It is also worth mentioning that even if some of the information given on here does not make much sense to you now, this could change in the future. You may come back to some of these articles later on to find that they are providing information on something that you are currently dealing with.
