What is Rehab?

Rehab as an Addiction Treatment Option

Addiction is a condition that leads to a great deal of suffering and pain for those involved. There are many different types of addiction, from alcohol to drugs like heroin, cannabis or cocaine, and gambling. However, addiction is not only a problem for the individual, but also for their friends and family as well as society as a whole. It is easy to see why there has been so much interest in finding remedies for this condition. There are now many different treatment options available, but probably the most effective is a stay at one of our many drug rehab clinics in the UK. The secret to the success of this line of attack is that it takes the best of all the different approaches to addiction to creating a programme that is comprehensive. The fact that this programme takes place in a therapeutic environment increases the likelihood that the individual will benefit from it.

If you would like to hear more about the different options available to you, such as drug rehab treatment, then you can telephone us here on 0800 024 1476 (+44 203 1511488 outside the UK).

Rehab Defined

The word rehab is short for rehabilitation and it can be defined as meaning, "to restore to health." The goal of an alcohol or drug rehab is to help the individual break away from this type of substance abuse. People often say that ultimately these programmes do more than just restore the individual to how they were before the addiction. The real aim is to get the individual to a much better place in life – something that is going to be better than anything they have ever experienced previously. There are a few other things worth noting about alcohol and drug rehab:

The words "rehab" and "detox" seem to be interchangeable, but they are not the same thing. Detox refers to the initial detoxification stage of recovery when the individual will be dealing with withdrawals. Many rehabs do offer detox beds, but there are also many of them that do not offer this service. Furthermore, there are supervised detox facilities that are not rehabs.

Rehab usually refers to a residential programme, but there are also outpatient rehabs. The residential programme is considered more effective than the outpatient option, but the latter can be a good option for people who would not be able to enter a residential programme.

There are many different types of rehab, and these will use different approaches to help the individual break away from addiction. The ultimate aim of all these faculties will be the same, but they will go about it different ways. There is no one approach to recovery that seems to work for everyone, so the availability of these different approaches is a good thing.

The Benefits of Rehab

IIt is doubtful that anyone would ever agree to go to rehab unless there were some very good reasons for why they should do this. The benefits of undergoing addiction treatment at one of Addiction Helpline's drug rehab centres include:

These facilities provide the individual with a therapeutic and nurturing environment. It can make a real difference to their ability to break away from addiction because such an environment will magnify their motivation and determination. The individual may get the extra boost that they need to end their substance abuse problems by staying in this facility

When the person stays in this type of treatment programme, all the resources they are going to need to break away from addiction will surround them. Many of these resources will be available back in the real world, but the fact that they are all in the one place makes it more likely that the individual will put them to use.

The aim of this programme is to help the individual get to the root of their problems. It is vital because when the individual gives up alcohol or drugs they will likely be back where they started before falling into substance abuse. Unless these underlying causes of addiction are dealt with, the individual will be at high risk of relapse or falling into new addictive behaviours.

The most common reason for why people will relapse in early recovery is that they feel unable to cope with life. It may be because they will have been using alcohol or drugs to help them cope with life, but now they have nothing with which to replace it. One of the important goals of rehab is to provide the individual with appropriate coping tools and strategies.

When the individual is in rehab, they will be surrounded by other people who are on the same path. It can be so empowering for the individual to have other people around them who share a common goal. During their stay in rehab, the person will always have people near them who understand, and who can offer them support.

Another important goal of rehab is to help the person develop life skills like anger management and assertiveness training. It is common for people to fall into addiction at a young age before they have had a chance to develop these skills. In rehab, they can be fast tracked through these life skills so that they will be better able to find success in life.

The individual will have plenty of time with a therapist. It gives them the opportunity to comprehend their current situation, and to develop plans for how they can improve things in the future.

During their stay in rehab, the individual will be protected from the usual temptations and stresses. They will also be able to focus fully on getting better because they will not have to worry about going to work or taking care of family responsibilities.

Free Rehab Clinics in the UK

Free Rehabs

We assume you are visiting our website because you are suffering from alcohol abuse or addiction or you know someone who is. You might also be aware there are some free rehab programmes available in the UK. Let’s talk about these free programmes and what they can, and cannot, offer you.

We'll start by first letting you know we are an independent referral organisation specialising in helping alcoholics and their families get the treatment they need to overcome addiction. We make it our business to stay abreast of what every clinic in the UK offers at any given time, letting us match everyone who contacts us with the appropriate treatment programme.

You should know that we work with private clinics all across the country. However, we also maintain information regarding programmes offered by alcohol charities, support groups, and the NHS. Our goal is to make sure you receive the help you need regardless of your circumstances or ability to pay.

Free Rehab Options

We cannot discuss the free rehab options available without first explaining that there are many different types of treatment. What you will find through the NHS is significantly different from what is available through a private clinic. Here are the most common types of rehab programmes available:

  • Outpatient Programmes – Outpatient programmes are typically what you get from the NHS and alcohol rehab charities. They consist mainly of counselling and support provided through daily or weekly programmes lasting for several hours apiece. At the end of each day, the recovering alcoholic returns home.
  • Residential Treatment – Residential treatment is what you will find at a private rehab clinic. This type of treatment involves living at a residential facility for the duration of the programme, typically lasting between 6 and 12 weeks.
  • Counselling – Because counselling is such an important tool in alcohol rehab it is something offered by just about every programme. That said, you could also avail yourself of counselling only, through alcohol charities or professional counsellors.
  • Detox – Technically, detox and rehab are two separate things. However, detox is a necessary part of rehab if it is to be successful. Detox breaks the physical addiction to alcohol by separating the recovering alcoholic from his/her drink.

Now that you know the different types of services offered, let us consider the idea of free rehab. When we say ‘free rehab’, we are talking about services offered by the NHS and various alcohol charities. They are services any alcoholic or alcohol abuser can avail him or herself of.

To access those services through the NHS, you will likely have to visit your physician first. He or she will make the determination regarding what type of help you need. It may be different depending on whether you are assessed as an alcohol abuser or an alcoholic.

Effectiveness of Free Rehab

Free rehab services offered by the NHS and alcohol charities can be very beneficial to the alcohol abuser or individual in the early stages of alcoholism. Through counselling, group support and certain medications (when deemed appropriate by a physician), many of these individuals can achieve sobriety. Nevertheless, for the chronic alcoholic, free rehab programmes are usually of little long-term value.

The chronic alcoholic is not likely to be helped by free programmes because he or she is able to return home to their circumstances and enablers every day. They need complete separation in order to break their addiction. That’s where a residential treatment programme becomes extremely important.

Unlike free programmes, residential rehab completely isolates the alcoholic from both his or her drink and their circumstances. The physical separation forces their body to break its physical addiction to alcohol. The separation from circumstances makes it possible for counselling and support to get at the emotional and mental addictions.

How Do I qualify For Free Rehab?

For you, the idea of free rehab might be one of cost. In other words, you may agree that residential rehab is the best course of action for yourself or someone you love, but you do not believe you have the financial resources to pay for it. That’s understandable. If there is no way to financially afford residential treatment then, by all means, free rehab services are better than nothing at all.

That said, one of our jobs is to discuss financial issues with our clients to see if there is any way private, residential rehab can be obtained. There are a number of different options:

  • private medical insurance
  • grants from alcohol charities
  • donations from family and friends
  • commercial financing.

If we explore all of the financing options with you and still come up empty, we can help you get into free programmes offered by the NHS. If you complete these programmes and still find long-term sobriety out of reach, the NHS might be willing to place you in a residential programme at a private clinic. Though this is not a regular practice for the NHS, they have been known to go this route for chronic alcoholics who have no other hope.

Getting Help Now

Discussing free rehab versus a paid residential treatment programme is of no value if you are not willing to get the help you need. This is the cornerstone of drug rehab. UK experts agree that the addict unwilling to seek treatment cannot be helped no matter what programme he or she is enrolled in. So now the choice is yours.

If you are visiting our website because you suspect you may have a drinking problem, you need to want recovery before anyone can help you. If that’s not the case with you, take a few minutes and think about your loved ones. Did you know your alcoholism is just as destructive to them as it is to you?  For their sakes, get some help.

If you are visiting our website on behalf of someone you love, you can still take action by contacting us today. We will make you aware of all the treatment options available to your loved one; will help you understand cost issues; we will even make our recommendations and advise you on conducting an intervention.

For both the alcoholic and his/her loved ones, help is available. Those involved only need be willing to seek it out. Please do not delay another moment. Every day you wait is another day alcohol has the opportunity to destroy lives.

Good Reasons Not to Delay Your Recovery

One of the problems with addiction is that the denial associated with the condition means that the individual will always have excuses to continue using alcohol or drugs. Even when the person is able to see how the substance abuse is destroying their life, they can still delay getting help. The addictive part of their thinking will be there whispering in their ear – telling them that they have all the time in the world to get this problem sorted. The reality is that these thoughts are a lie, and they are just working to keep the person imprisoned. There is no justifiable reason to delay because:

  • · If the individual does not feel ready to stop now, then there is no reason for why they should feel ready to stop later. It is dangerous for the person to wait around for the motivation to arise because this can be a path to misery and death. The person who is caught up in addiction has to summon up the motivation to quit, and if they cannot do this, they must get the addiction help that will encourage them to develop this motivation.
  • · The longer the person remains trapped in addiction, the more they are going to suffer. It makes no sense that people would want to suffer any more than they already have. The only reason for why they may be prepared to do this is that they mistakenly believe that things will get better in the future. This is just another lie that is propagated by the denial aspect of the addiction. What the individual in this situation is doing is similar to a person who has had a limb amputated, but is waiting for it to grow back.
  • · The sooner the person is able to quit the addiction, the sooner they will be able to enjoy the benefits of this new life. Fear is usually not enough to ensure long-term change because people forget over time, but the benefits of recovery make it something worth fighting for. This really can be a second chance in life for the individual, and there are plenty of fine examples of those who were able to break away from addiction and turn things completely around.
  • · There is no telling how fast the individual will progress in their addiction. Things can turn bad quickly, and if the individual persists in the behaviour, they will be taking a huge risk.
