What is needed to Break Away from Addiction?

It is difficult to provide a comprehensive list of things that are needed for people to break away from addiction. The problem is that each person will differ in this regard; some will require a great deal of resources while others will require much less. The important thing is for the person to evaluate their own situation, or better yet get experts like us to help them, so that they can create the type of addiction treatment plan that will be most likely to help them escape the substance abuse. Here are just some of the things that the individual may need to include in their treatment plan:

  • · If the person is still resistant to any type of addiction treatment, they may benefit from spending time with an addiction therapist. This professional can help the individual see the reality of their situation, so that they become willing to change. The therapist can also use motivation interviewing to ensure that the person is determined enough to make recovery a reality.
  • · A supervised detox will be required in many situations and advisable in others. Any person who has been using alcohol or drugs such as barbiturates heavily for a long time will be at risk of severe withdrawals known as delirium tremens (DTs). If the withdrawals of these people are not supervised, they could easily die. Even those people who are not in the high-risk group for DTs can still benefit greatly from a supervised detox because it will mean that they are more comfortable. It is during the withdrawal stage that the individual is most likely to relapse, and by entering a detox, they will be far more likely to see things through.
  • · Rehab is going to be a great option for most people because this will provide them with a solid foundation in recovery. By entering this type of programme, the person will be able to put all their attention where it needs to be, and this means that by the time they go home they should be ready for sober living. Rehab gives the person all the tools they are going to need to build a success in recovery.
  • · Some individuals will have complex addictions that also involve mental health problems such as depression – this is often referred to as a dual diagnosis. It is vital that these people get the help they need, or they will be unable to settle into recovery and will be at high risk of relapse.
  • · It is common for those who have fallen into addiction to be dealing with deep trauma. It may therefore be important for them to have continued therapy in recovery to help them deal with these issues. If these traumas are not dealt with, they can just fester and cause further problems down the road.

We can help you find the type of addiction treatment that you need. Call us right away on 0800 140 4824 to begin your path into recovery. The resources you need will usually be available in the Canterbury area, but if not we can help you find resources elsewhere in the UK or abroad.
