How the Addicted Mind Keeps People Trapped and Powerless

It is often claimed that addiction is a particularly difficult condition to treat because a symptom of the disease is that you don’t believe you have a problem. The denial that people fall into because of substance abuse can create a strong wall between them and the reality of their situation. Without this high level of denial, it is doubtful that people would ever fall into addiction in the first place. It occurs because:

  • · Once the individual has developed an addiction to alcohol or drugs, they will have a deep need to keep on using. The individual will also start to become aware of how these substances are causing problems for them. This leads to a situation known as cognitive dissonance. The individual experiences psychological discomfort because of this cognitive dissonance, and they need to use denial as a means to end this discomfort. There are a number of ways that the individual can do this, and one of these is to blame the problems in their life on things other than the addiction. It is important to keep in mind that the individual will be doing all this subconsciously.
  • · People tend to be overly optimistic when it comes to handling their own problems. This means that the individual is willing to continue into the downward spiral of addiction because they are still convinced that they can sort things out for themselves.
  • · It is common for people caught in addiction to have a feeling almost of invincibility. This is sometimes referred to as “terminal uniqueness” and it is another way that people deal with cognitive dissonance in their thinking. It means that while the individual may accept that substance abuse is bad for other people, they will view themselves as a special case. It is because of this that even those substance abusers who have fallen really low into addiction will still insist that they are “not one of the serious cases.”
  • · It is hard for people to admit that an aspect of their behaviour is out of their control. The individual can feel ashamed and embarrassed about this and want to conceal this truth from other people.
  • · It is common for people who fall into addiction to suffer from low self-esteem. This means that they can become willing to accept the pain of addiction as something that they deserve. It is not that they are denying the reality of their situation, but that they are denying the possibility of recovery. The longer the individual remains addicted, the more their self-esteem will fall, so this type of resignation to the suffering becomes common as the individual progresses into addiction.
