Why Are There Different Approaches to Addiction Recovery?

When people decide to break away from addiction in Greater Manchester they will usually have to choose between different recovery options. This can mean that the individual feels a bit overwhelmed, and they may wonder about why there are so many different paths for them to take. The reasons for these different approaches include:

· As yet, there does not seem to be any one approach to addiction recovery that works for everyone. What we do have is some very effective approaches that seem to work for different kinds of people. For example, some individuals will be able to break away from addiction using a 12 Step programme, while others who do better with something like cognitive behavioural therapy – there will even be those who do best with a combination of approaches.

· People from all backgrounds can fall into addiction, and so it is hardly surprising that there is no one approach that works for them all. The goal is to always find the approach that suits the individual rather than trying to fit the person into an approach with which they may feel uncomfortable.

· Some individuals will have already tried other approaches to recovery, and these will not have worked for them. By trying something different, they may find a path that will take them to their goal. Of course, if the individual is not really committed to recovery it is doubtful that any approach will work for them.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Addiction Recovery Programme

Here are just some of the things that are worth considering when choosing an addiction recovery programme:

· The overall philosophy of the programme, as this will determine the contents and how things are presented. For example, there are many rehabs that use the Minnesota Model, which is based on the 12 Steps of AA.

· The approaches used as part of the programme. This will include things like group therapy, motivational interviewing, and group therapy. Most rehabs will offer an eclectic mix of approaches.

· The duration of the treatment – this can range anywhere from 10 days to 2 years.

· The types of professionals that will be involved in your care. Some programmes will only have therapists while other programmes will have a whole host of professionals – the level of input you need in this regard will depend on your needs.

· The availability of detox beds. There are some rehabs where you can go to detox, but there are also many where they expect you to have already passed through detox before arriving.

· The rules and regulations for residents. For example, will you be allowed to have visitors and take in your mobile phone?
